Smart switching between green electricity and gas
In 2024, we installed an e-boiler at our production site in Venray. This enables us to produce steam for our production process using green electricity instead of natural gas. Since commissioning, we’ve seen promising results.
Aviko Rixona aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by 65% by 2030 compared to 2021 and to be fully CO₂-neutral by 2050. Our roadmap includes both major and minor investments to achieve this goal. The e-boiler in Venray is an important part of that plan. In 2025, this installation already saved an average of 13% gas, equivalent to the consumption of 1,800 households. Since September, savings have even reached 20%.

Keeping the power grid balanced
In Venray, steam supply does not run entirely on green electricity. To keep the Dutch electricity grid stable, we switch smartly: when there is a surplus, we use green electricity; when there is a shortage, we switch to natural gas so that enough electricity remains available for others. We do this in close cooperation with the grid operator and another major electricity consumer in the region who also uses an e-boiler.
Expansion to Warffum
The e-boiler in Venray has a significant impact on our overall CO₂ reduction. That’s why we are now installing an e-boiler at our production site in Warffum. Commissioning is scheduled for January 2026. At this location, we expect to save 10% of gas.
Building a sustainable chain together
Sustainability is one of Aviko Rixona’s strategic pillars. Together with our growers, suppliers, colleagues, customers, and other partners, we are working toward a future-proof, sustainable chain. By becoming more sustainable, we reduce the CO₂ footprint of our company and our potato ingredients and products. This way, we contribute to a better climate and remain relevant to our customers.
